Get
out of your head and into your body
A class where the funny gets physical
Body
Comedy is a class developed by international comedian Karen
Loftus. Karen pulls on her background as a comedian, improviser,
clown, dancer, yogi and healer to create this unique and transformational
class. Body Comedy is the full integration of body, mind and spirit.
The goal of the class is to bring each participant back to a state
of "Le Jeu" (Joy), to rekindle a childlike joy.
Class begins with a series of exercises warming up the body with
yogic breath and movement, releasing sound and stress, creating
clarity and energy, followed by a meditation and visualization.
Once
on their feet, the games begin, which are extensive and so is the
fun. The games create a space for proactive behavior, risk taking
and moving beyond your personal limits. It also creates synergy
within a group, as there are many games where their success is based
on the group effort. The games are interspersed with clown and improv
exercises. Many of the clown games rely on the use of the body and
the spirit of the clown to communicate. In our daily lives, we rely
on the spoken word to communicate. These exercises give us the opportunity
to see just how much we can and do convey without words. The class
concludes with free form dance, movement and an affirmation. Music
is played throughout the class.
All of the exercises and games, be it a breath exercise or a game
of tag are mirrored tools that each participant can then take into
their daily lives, as the class is a mirror to the world around
us. Once personal changes are made and experienced in the mind,
the body and the spirit, in the class, it's amazing what changes
will then take place outside of the class.
Karen initially developed Body Comedy as a class to be taught
to women and girls, survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse
and drug and alcohol abuse. The class enabled them to rekindle a
childlike joy that had been dimmed from years of abuse and neglect.
Due
to the success of the class, Karen has been asked and has taught
in juvenile halls, psyche wards, in hospitals to breast cancer survivors,
theater departments at universities, comedy colleges and classes,
corporations, gyms, and several private organizations. This is a
great class for anyone in search of their voice, their creative
spirit, and a creative adventure or for anyone looking to let go
and have a laugh.
