American Woman
Comedic Travels in Search of Serious Self Book I & II

By Karen Loftus

American Woman, Comedic Travels in Search of Serious Self, is one woman’s journey around the world. It was through her travels abroad that Karen realized her label in the world was, American Woman. Like most Americans, Karen was more aligned with her heritage than her homeland. Raised Irish American, she always believed she was Irish until she stood on stage in front of an audience of four hundred angry Irishmen in Galway.

What is in a label and how is one expected to play it out? Does face- to- face contact break down barriers or build them? Playing with stereotypes, her own and others, she makes fun of us making fun of each other. International comedian Karen Loftus takes you along for the rocky ride as she travels through the US, Europe, Asia and The Middle East humorously exploring what it means to be an American and a Woman, on stage, in the world and at home.

It was a completely different experience to go back to mainly Muslim countries in Southeast Asia with her solo comedy show, American Woman after September 11th, than it was before. She was already pushing the envelope where there wasn’t one, but she had no idea how controversial it would be to have traditional Muslim women run up to her on the street proclaiming, “I have a vagina!” She struck a chord and a nerve, as a large media outcry and her ban, followed her departure.

American Woman, is a provocative, poignant and timely piece for anyone with a sense of humor, a sense of adventure and sense of personal history.

American Woman is a memoir, a travelogue, an American abroad story. With the quick wit of David Sedaris and the universally sexy appeal of Sex and the City, American Woman will appeal to a large and diverse global audience, every one from the hip urban demographic to the wide eyed suburban sector, the savvy traveller and the ever curious international audience that continues to wonder what exactly is an “American Woman”?

Karen Loftus, international comedian, actor, award wining playwright and Tennessee William’s fellow has performed all over the world. Her award winning plays, The Color of My Dreams, It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World”, Barbie’s Dolls, I’m Not the Blonde You Think I Am and American Woman, have been performed in New York, LA, London, Hong Kong and in theatres and festivals around the world.
